Shattered: The Mind of a Driven Climber

Shattered is ana artistic 5 minute video profile of Steve House that took filmmaker Tyler Stableford six months to make (Outside just posted an article about the making of Shattered).

In parts the narration sounds a bit over-the-top to me, but it ultimately offers some insight into why extreme athletes put themselves into dangerous situations over and over again, which, in a media environment filled with idolatry and uncritical praise for achievement, is both refreshing and needed.

What do you think?

  1. Dramatic, for sure–but interesting. It’s easy for me to judge extreme atheletes as a little crazy, but one or two of my adventures would definitely come off crazy to some people…all a matter of perspective, I guess.

  2. Isn’t being that passionate about something what makes life worth living, though? Seems so dire to me.

  3. Definitely a matter of perspective. People don’t start doing life-threatening stunts all the sudden one day. They start by pushing the envelope a little at a time, so each time they do something crazier, to them it’s just a little bit more dangerous than the last thing.

What were your crazy adventures? Do tell ;)

  4. I agree. It is. Something the documentary didn’t mention, though, was that Steve had recently had a life-threatening accident (http://www.stevehouse.net/Site/Training_Blog/Entries/2010/5/9_Fall_off_Mount_Temple.html). I think that had something to do with the ominous tone of the film.
